The Khabouris (also spelled Khaburis) Codex is a copy of the oldest known Eastern Canon of the New Testament in its native, and the original language of the Scriptures, Aramaic. The physical manuscript has been carbon-dated at approximately 1000 AD plus or minus 50 years. The colophon bears the seal and signature of the Bishop at the Church at Nineveh, then capital of the Assyrian Empire located today in the present-day Iraqi city of Mosul. According to colophon it is a copy of a text from approximately 164 AD.
The Khabouris Manuscript was on display for public view as an exhibit in the Queensborough Community College Art Gallery in Bayside, New York, while conservation work continued.
The Khabouris Manuscript was removed from QCC (without our prior knowledge) and was taken to London for auction by Sotheby’s back in June 2007. The sale was not completed at that time; however, we have lost track of where the actual Manuscript is now located.
Divided Rights To Khabouris Stewardship Contract (pdf format) to view the original Khabouris Manuscript Codex Irrevocable Stewardship Contract in full. (Note: Daniel MacDougald Jr was Trustee of the Khabouris and Fr. Gerrit Crawford was the initial Steward of this Stewardship on behalf of the Khabouris Foundation. In August 2001, the Archbishop of the International Orthodox Christian Institute appointed fr. michael ryce as successor to Fr. Crawford, upon his retirement.)
To date, the costs of our end of the Khabouris Manuscript project have been born by HeartLand. Other team members have carried financial costs as well, i.e. for high resolution images (Great work Eric), for the conservation work (Thanks Fr. Faustino) and for the displaying at QCC, and more.
The value of this document is beyond monetary, it is an important historic relic to our faith, the teaching contained within the Manuscript can and will change the world. We intend to do all we possibly can to uphold our commitment to the sacred trust given us toward this work. Whether we can obtain the actual Manuscript or just continue to uphold the rights given us in the Stewardship, please support HeartLand’s continued work – click the donation button below.
